The National Alliance of Tajikistan expresses its deep concerns about the decision of the Supreme Court of Tajikistan to block access to the independent news agency website “Akhbor.com” in the country, as well as the growing psychological and physical pressure on independent journalists, which is a serious violation of the right to freedom of expression and is contrary to national interests.
Repressive attitude of the authorities of Tajikistan towards the media and journalists, including blocking access to the independent news agency website “Akhbor.com” and the baseless accusation that it provides a platform for “terrorist and extremist organizations,” two shameful attacks on “Asia-plus” journalists Abdullo Gurbati, and widespread campaigns for discreditation and insulting some independent journalists indicates that the authorities of Tajikistan can not stand the activities of independent media, the number of which sharply decreased after the repressions of 2015, and intends to completely exclude independent media from the country’s information space.
The authorities of Tajikistan led by Emomali Rahmon, show independent media and journalists as enemies on these sensitive days, when the Tajik people suffer from the coronavirus COVID-19, and the authorities have shown that they use this tragedy and misfortune of the Tajik people for their own limited political interests and to oppress dissidents and civil society.
The National Alliance of Tajikistan strongly condemns such an unhealthy attitude of the authorities towards independent media and states that independent media are one of the most important pillars of democracy and the existence of free and it is impossible to build a democratic society without independent media.
